Projects Nature and Biodiversity

Our projects use the energy of people in the community to learn what threatens our environment and wildlife and take practical action to restore nature – planting and maintaining trees in rural areas and towns and working to combat pollution of the River Exe.

We know that pollution, and loss of wild areas and tree cover means that many species are under threat, essential pollinators are disappearing, and land is degraded and more prone to flooding.

Tiverton Tree Team

Since 2019, Tree Planting volunteers have planted thousands of trees and tree seeds at private public and community sites around Tiverton, raised funds for trees, tree guards and mulch, and maintenance sessions are organised as the trees grow.

Community Orchard

Developed in winter 2021/2 on a Council – owned site near the river Exe behind Morrisons supermarket in Tiverton, it provides a relaxing natural space for the community, a venue for community celebrations, and a future source of food for the public each autumn.

Tree Team depends on large groups of community volunteers each winter for planting and maintenance. Sessions are hard work but friendly and fun- all ages welcome! Find planting dates in the Newsletter, or contact

Friends of the River Exe (FORE)

A joint project between Sustainable Tiverton and Transition Groups from Exeter and Exmouth, started in 2023 to bring together local people and groups to protect the River Exe and its tributaries and restore it to health.

Volunteers organise a range of activities including citizen science to bring community evidence to polluters, and festivals and community events for all ages to celebrate the life of the river.

We work with Westcountry Rivers Trust and Sea-Changers, on citizen science, and also with Tiverton Museum.on an Oral History project to record memories of the Exe long ago We also support the annual Salmon Run along the Exe. Find out more at and contact them by email at –
