Projects Energy and Transport

Transport and Energy are among the largest contributors to UK carbon emissions – but we all need transport options and have to cook and heat our homes. Through our projects, and those of partner organisations, we aim to make lower emission transport options available to people of all ages, and to find affordable ways for people to reduce home energy use. We also contributed to the Tiverton Neighbourhood Plan. adopted in 2023, which includes environmental recommendations on house building, and proposals for increasing local environmentally friendly transport options.

Home Energy Efficiency Group

With the right advice we can heat our homes better and keep warmer, while reducing energy used and cost! The energy group works to promote energy-saving quick fixes and provide information and education about affordable home insulation options. Trained Home Energy volunteers can give you the information you need to reduce energy used and keep your house warmer.

Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) train volunteer Home Energy Champions, and we also provide a venue for their 1:1advice sessions locally. We would be interested to work with local small renewable generators to set up an Energy Local Club to benefit from local generation.

Green Transport Tiverton

This project aims to raise awareness about more sustainable and active ways of getting around and promotes local sustainable travel options which will increase walking, cycling, and use of public transport and non-polluting vehicles. We support and contribute to the Devon County Council Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) and other local active travel initiatives, especially for young people, such as walk/ bike to school days and Junior Park Runs

Active Families Tiverton

The aim is to encourage adults (mums, dads and grandparents) to cycle with the children they look after. 6 bikes and trailers are available for them to use, including helmets. Rides are organised and led by a trained ride leader. The project was supported and funded by Active Devon and Mid Devon District Council and activities also have support from Sustrans. We hope bikes and trailers will be available when not in use for borrowing through our Share Shop community Library – look at www.shareshoptiverton.org.uk.

Tiverton To Exeter Cycle Route Development

Our cycling and walking survey in 2023, and other information gathered from local people informs public policy and assists the creation of maps of local walks by the Town Council. The top request from cyclists and a priority for years, is for the cycle route from Tiverton to Exeter mentioned in the Exe Valley strategic plan to be developed. The route down the Exe valley on old railway and lanes parallel to the A396 was identified in the Tiverton neighbourhood plan and in 2024 LCWIP identified Tiverton to Exeter as the most popular commute. The driving route is fast and bendy, so this route is crucial both for the safety of existing cyclists and to encourage more cycling in the face of the climate emergency.
